Sores and orthodontics

9 Apr

One of our concerns prior to orthodontics is the possibility of sores during orthodontic treatment, how extensive they will be and how are they going to affect our daily life. Wearing braces can increase the possibility of sores but very few patients suffer them.

Sores usually occur because your body needs to get used to having something brand new on top of your teeth.

Sores usually occur because your body needs to get used to having something brand new on top of your teeth.

Just like you may get sores on your feet from wearing new shoes, you may develop sores in your mouth until you get used to the braces. Don´t worry!! They usually they heal within 3-5 days.

Sores can be prevented by placing orthodontic wax on the area that is bothering you. If sores do happen, there are a variety of products available in pharmacies to treat wounds or sores. The most effective are those that create a protective film over the wound thereby reducing any pain and accelerating healing. Other products available only decrease the discomfort. Rinsing with warm salt wáter significantly reduces the discomfort aswell.
