Faqs About Metal braces
Braces have changed greatly over the last few years. Unlike the metal mouth braces of the past, braces are now much smaller and less noticeable. They also move your teeth at a much quicker rate while using gentler forces resulting in less discomfort.
There are many type of braces available. Dr. Nancy Pancko uses traditional metal braces, as well as the ceramic clear braces which are the clearer option to traditional braces. She also uses self ligating braces such as Damon braces for select cases. Dr. Pancko also has Wildsmiles for patients looking to express themselves with their braces.
Braces can be used to correct all types of bites. They are quick, predictable and the most affordable.
Braces can be used at any age to align the teeth properly and to establish a good bite. Adults of the present are not their denture wearing parents of the past! Adults are now expected to maintain their teeth for a lifetime so it is very important to keep them healthy. Crowding and bite issues can compromise the longevity of a tooth and now many adults are seeking orthodontic treatment in order to keep their teeth and bite healthy. At the Wilmington Orthodontic Center, 50% of our patients are adults! We have many aesthetic options available to adults to keep their orthodontic treatment as discreet as possible.
Colored braces are actually little colored ties we use to attach the wire that goes between the teeth to the braces. You can choose colors everytime you come for an adjustment. We also have Wildsmile braces with the shape of a heart, diamond or football for those patients wanting to show their unique side!
No! Braces do not hurt. In order to place the braces, we paint your teeth with two different conditioners and stick your braces to your teeth just like stickers. For a week or two after you have your braces placed, you may notice some soreness in your teeth when eating or a couple of mouth sores as your cheeks get used to the braces. Thats it!
Braces only align your teeth. Rubber bands get your teeth to meet together correctly. Almost every patient in braces need to use rubber bands. The wonderful thing is that if you use them well, you will likely get out treatment early.
Brackets are what are attached to your teeth with a little tooth colored glue. There are metal braces, clear ceramic braces and lingual braces. They all work the same but just cary depending on color and location. Archwires are the wires that go through each bracket to apply a gentle force to move the tooth into the desired position. There are different types of wires that do different things to move your tooth. When people say that they are getting their braces ¨tightened¨, it is actually us just changing the wires! O-rings or ties are the small rubber rings that hold the wire in place on the bracket. There are ties that are clear and ties with color. These are changed every 4-6 weeks at your appointments. Powerchains are chains of ties used to close spaces. Bands are sometimes used on the back teeth. They are little rings that go around the back molars when we need something that will hold around the teeth a little better than braces.
